Chances are Mac Jones won’t be the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots when they kick off the 2024 NFL season. It’s possible the former first-round pick remains on the roster, but he’ll face stiff competition for the starting role next season.

Other alternatives include drafting a player like LSU’s Jayden Daniels with the third overall pick, but the Patriots have other needs to. It’s always possible the Patriots trade down, or pick a different player, like Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr. with the third pick. If so, these scenarios likely mean that the Patriots already solved their QB needs in free agency, and there’s one name who has plenty of support within the organization.

According to Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald, pending free agent Baker Mayfield “has supporters within the New England Patriots’ organization.” Yet, that doesn’t mean Mayfield is automatically headed to Boston.

“Mayfield has supporters from within the Patriots’ organization, per sources, but there are some impediments to signing him. It’s not a surprise that Mayfield is liked by members of the staff. He was drafted by a front office that included current Patriots de facto general manager Eliot Wolf and coached by offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt and quarterbacks coach T.C. McCartney with the Browns. Patriots senior personnel advisor Pat Stewart and senior offensive assistant Ben McAdoo spent time with Mayfield with the Panthers, as well.”

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are expected to do everything they can to ensure Mayfield doesn’t leave this offseason, and his decision could largely depend on what Mike Evans does too.

Another interesting nugget Kyed added is that the Patriots have “shown no interest in Kirk Cousins” while indicating the Vikings’ QB is likely to demand much more money than Mayfield will.
