Phoenix Suns point guard Chris Paul is still eyeing his first championship, seeking a path to put the finishing touches on a resume that will land him in the Hall of Fame. However, it’s become clear that Paul’s path to the NBA Finals likely won’t happen in Phoenix.

After being eliminated in the NBA playoffs, the Suns began making changes. Monty Williams was fired and replaced by Frank Vogel, replacing a coach Paul had a close relationship with and bringing in a defensive-minded leader.

As the Suns evaluate Deandre Ayton’s future, exploring trade options, Paul’s time in Phoenix is likely drawing to a close. Amid swirling NBA rumors regarding his future, the Suns are reportedly looking for ways to move on from him this summer.

According to NBA insider Shams Charania, the Suns are actively engaged in trade conversations with teams involving Chris Paul.

Despite initial reports that Paul would be released, Phoenix has kept the veteran guard on its roster. The Suns are focused on trying to trade him first, eyeing some form of compensation to help them build a championship contender for next season.

However, a critical deadline is looming. Paul is currently only owed $15.8 million guaranteed, but the entirety of his $30.8 million salary for next season is fully guaranteed on June 28. At that price point, several teams interested in the 38-year-old could look for more affordable options.

The issue for Phoenix is that multiple NBA teams know Paul being waived is still an option. It provides them with some leverage, with general managers willing to gamble on competing with other teams for Paul in free agency instead of trading something to acquire him.

For now, Paul remains the Suns’ starting point guard. However, it’s apparent that his days in Phoenix are numbered and many championship contenders are hoping he hits the open market.
