Dillon Brooks has received a boatload of attention for a player who’s a starting-caliber talent, but nothing more. But it’s not like Brooks didn’t put this on himself. He’s frequently making eye-opening comments to the media, whether it’s criticizing opponents, or making bold claims about either himself or the Memphis Grizzlies.
Well, it’s led to Brooks receiving a bit of a bad reputation in the NBA community, with the most recent report suggesting the Grizzlies aren’t even the slightest bit interested in retaining the 27-year-old soon-to-be free agent.
Yet, despite the suggestion the Grizzlies wouldn’t bother trying to re-sign the 6-foot-7 swingman, ESPN’s Tim McMahon also notes that Memphis wasn’t too pleased about the reported non-interest becoming public.
In his latest appearance on the Howdy Partners podcast, McMahon says the Grizzlies “did not want the messaging out there” of the blame for the Grizzlies’ playoff elimination being placed on Brooks.
While Brooks certainly brought more attention to the organization, and not necessarily in a good way, how the Grizzlies’ loss can be attributed to one of their five starters doesn’t really add up either. Brooks was never supposed to be their savior.
Nevertheless, other executives expect Brooks to still have a respectable market in free agency, with several teams having interest in the swingman. We’ll see what his expected rate is after reportedly rejecting multiple offers from Memphis in the past.
