Tony Stewart and Jimmie Johnson, two of the best NASCAR drivers of their era, have each experienced what it’s like to win at Daytona International Speedway. While reaching victory lane isn’t as likely now, the two racing legends do seem to have genuine interest in racing again at Daytona next season.
On Friday night, Stewart got behind the wheel in the Truck Series for his first NASCAR race since 2016. While he wound up getting involved in a wreck in his first Truck appearance in two decades, he came out of it with an interest in getting behind the wheel again in the future.

While fans likely won’t see the 54-year-old behind the wheel in the Cup Series again, the same can’t be said for Johnson. He’ll be competing in the Daytona 500 on Sunday, and he’ll participate in the San Diego street race at Coronado Naval Base later this year.
As for the 2027 NASCAR season, Johnson said that he’ll drive a fourth entry for Legacy Motor Club in the Daytona 500 next year. He also revealed that it will be the last time he ever competes in a Cup Series race.
Johnson, who turns 51 in September, is a seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and a two-time Daytona 500 winner. His appearance on Sunday will come two decades after his first Daytona 500 victory and just a year after he finished third in the season-opening Cup Series race behind William Byron and Tyler Reddick.

The 2027 Daytona 500 could prove to be very special, as there seems to be a real chance that it will be the last time future Hall of Famer Denny Hamlin is behind the wheel of the No. 11 car for the iconic event. If that proves to be the case, tickets for next year’s marquee race at Daytona International Speedway could be in greater demand than in recent years.
