After a prolonged series of legal exchanges, an unofficial NASCAR museum commemorating the golden era of the sport has closed and its contents are off to Florida where they will be sold by Mecum Auctions.

It was called the Winston Cup Museum, and it celebrated the NASCAR Modern Era from 1971 to 2003 but was legally challenged by the current owners of the Winston cigarette rightsholders, ITG Brands.

The complete history of their legal back-and-forth can be read here, here and here.

Nevertheless, the physical museum has now closed and founder Will Spencer says he plans to continue the mission of spotlighting this period of NASCAR history with a website and social media experience renamed the Win Cup Museum.

Meanwhile, 32 cars and numerous fire suits, helmets and trophies (many of them signed by legends) are amongst the items headed to Kissimmee, Florida to be auctioned from January 2-14.
