In what is being described as a full-scale NASCAR team raid of top Australian Supercars talent, Ford Performance backed Cam Waters appears to be next in line to try his hand at the Cup Series in select races next season.
The 29-year-old has reportedly signed a one-year extension with Tickford Racing that would permit him to compete abroad during his off-weekends in 2024. He carries with him a Monster Energy sponsorship that carries a lot of synergy with NASCAR.
He wants to follow in the footsteps of three-time series champion Shane van Gisbergen, who won in his NASCAR Cup Series debut with Trackhouse in the inaugural race on the Streets of Chicago in July and newly crowned champion Brodie Kostecki, who made his Cup Series debut in August at Indianapolis with Richard Childress Racing.
Van Gisbergen will contest the full NASCAR Xfinity Series campaign with Kaulig Racing with support from Trackhouse in 2024 with Kostecki expected to make numerous additional starts with Childress this coming season.
In a report from Speedcafe in Australia, Waters reportedly declined an offer to replace SVG at Triple Eight Engineering. “While coy on his NASCAR aspirations, Waters confirms that he wants to race overseas at classic tracks, as well as reiterating his desire to compete regularly in the United States,” stated the report.
The report linked Tickford to Roush Fenway Keselowski, which started a third part-time Cup Series entry for the 2024 season, which will make its debut in the Daytona 500 with Cup Series veteran David Ragan driving in a one-off No. 60 entry.
Speedcafe said Waters would make three starts with RFK Racing this season and that a ‘deal was done.’
