NASCAR went countless years without a major change to the 38-race schedule until recently when the leaders of the sport pursued fresh ideas. Now, another bold scheduling idea has reportedly come to the table.

According to Queen City News’ Brett Baldeck, NASCAR has been in early discussions with Rockingham Speedway about a possible return to the famous racing venue in the future.

The track has received a full repave that created a smooth racing surface. There have also been some renovations with more coming soon as the venue looks to modernize itself after inactivity.

As stated above, Rockingham Speedway is moving forward with several renovations in the future. This includes removing grandstands, a sundeck for live music and standard seating, new SAFER barriers, and lights across the entire venue, according to Queen City News.

These changes would make the track a perfect atmosphere to hold NASCAR events when completed. In the meantime, it is smart to remain in discussions with Rockingham Speedway to formulate a potential reunion.

Rockingham Speedway Executive Vice President Justin Jones talked to Queen City News about the project and the idea of NASCAR returning to the popular speedway.

“The ball is now in (NASCAR)’s court…Everywhere I go around town it’s, ‘when is NASCAR coming back?’ The same answer I can give them is, ‘we are doing everything we can,’ because that is our number one goal.”

Quite frankly, it is smart for NASCAR to monitor the progress of renovations and events that happen at the track. If the results are deemed a success, there is no reason the sport can’t return to Rockingham Speedway.

Many race fans will witness the return of North Wilkesboro Speedway for All-Star Weekend this season and if the sport can give them a chance, it’s only right to give Rockingham Speedway an opportunity.

If the renovations, fan turnout, and actual racing don’t go as planned, there is no need to return to the track. However, if fans within the area are given a chance, it would be pretty unlikely they would let it go to waste.

As of now, it is a waiting game on whether NASCAR actually returns to Rockingham Speedway but there is much to be excited about as the venue looks to produce an electric atmosphere moving forward.
