Willson Contreras’ future with the St. Louis Cardinals is uncertain, like many other players on the roster. St. Louis figures to be one of the most active teams on the trade market this winter as several players could be made available. However, what is the latest on the Cardinals’ first baseman?
According to The Athletic’s Katie Woo, Contreras is open to trade offers and has become more willing to waive his full no-trade clause. With two more years and a club option left on his contract, any team acquiring Contreras could have him through the 2028 MLB season.
Despite the rising possibility of Contreras being moved by the Cardinals, the organization doesn’t feel the need to trade him for a poor package, according to Woo. In 2025, the 33-year-old player had 20 home runs and 80 runs batted in over 135 games, with the latter being a career high.
Contreras has missed time with injuries throughout his career, but the move to first base was an effort to extend his career. The three-time All-Star is still capable of playing at a high level for a contending team, making him an intriguing trade candidate over the coming weeks.
