The San Diego Padres haven’t been mentioned in rumors for top MLB free agents, but they are still trying to improve the team. Despite outside interest, the Padres won’t trade Fernando Tatis Jr., as they look to field the best team possible. So, what is the latest on San Diego’s plans for the 2025 MLB offseason?
The Padres are looking for more pitching, which seems to be more critical than their starting lineup, as said by San Diego president of baseball operations A.J. Preller on MLB Network. As of now, the Padres’ rotation is headlined by Nick Pivetta, who is a significant downgrade compared to 2025.
Dylan Cease and Michael King were the one-two punch for San Diego last season, but both will likely leave the organization this winter. In fact, Cease has already signed a contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, while King continues to have a strong market in free agency. So, could Mason Miller transition to a starting pitcher?
The Padres plan to keep Miller in the bullpen, according to San Diego manager Craig Stammen, through ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez. Therefore, the Padres have to find more starting pitching if they want to truly compete in 2026. If not, San Diego’s rotation will lack depth and could be its weakness next season.
