Fernando Tatis Jr. is one of MLB’s biggest superstars, but his future in San Diego has been up for discussion. The San Diego Padres’ payroll is littered with large contracts, with Tatis under contract for nine more years. So, what is the latest on the superstar’s future in San Diego?
According to Joel Sherman on MLB Network, the Padres plan to keep Tatis for the 2026 season. Tatis, who has been involved in trade rumors, is not expected to be traded during the Winter Meetings or this offseason. Other names, such as Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts, are “untradeable,” per Sherman.
In 2025, Tatis posted 25 home runs and 71 runs batted in over 155 games. The 26-year-old star also earned his highest WAR in a season since being injured and suspended for performance-enhancing drugs in 2022. Overall, it was a solid season for Tatis, but the numbers could have been a little bit better.
Either way, San Diego needs to keep Tatis to push for a World Series, and that seems to be the plan moving forward. The Padres want to steal the National League from the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Tatis will play a significant part in those goals.
