Report: Yoan Moncada, White Sox agree to five-year, $70M extension

The Chicago White Sox and star third baseman Yoan Moncada have reportedly agreed on a five-year extension, per The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.

Moncada, who is coming off a breakout season, agreed to the five-year extension for $70 million. The contract also carries a team option for a sixth season, per Rosenthal, which would push the total contract value to $90 million. The deal potentially buys out Moncada’s first two free-agent years.

The 24-year-old moved from second base to the hot corner this past season and set career-best marks across the board. He posted a .915 OPS with 25 homers, 10 stolen bases and 79 RBI across 132 games.

Moncada joins teammates Eloy Jimenez and top outfield prospect Luis Robert to sign multi-year extensions with the White Sox. In exchange for signing the guaranteed deals, the players each sacrificed free-agent years early in their careers.

The White Sox have aggressively pushed to add significant talent o their roster this offseason. Now with Yasmani Grandal, Edwin Encarnacion and Dallas Keuchel joining the team, Chicago is in position to contend this season.
