The New York Mets will reportedly kick the tires on the possibility of signing a four-time All-Star, who just became available, to fill one of the many holes in their injury-riddled starting rotation.

Manager Buck Showalter, the New York Mets lineup, and the bullpen deserve a lot of credit for the start the team has gotten off to in 2023. They are 13-7 and only a game and a half behind the first-place Atlanta Braves in the National League East, despite there being a good reason for them to have a far worse record than they do.

The New York Mets starting rotation has been absolutely ravaged by injuries. Before the season started, free agent addition Jose Quintana was forced out for months after rib surgery. Then right before opening day, it was revealed that big-ticket free agent Justin Verlander had an injury that kept him out the first few weeks of the season. That was then followed by a bone spur in Carlos Carrasco’s pitching elbow.

However, things got worse this week when ace Max Scherzer was ejected from the game and will be suspended for 10 games after officials claimed he was using a sticky substance on his hand during a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. It is shocking how the New York Mets rotations have been hit with all sorts of trouble in April.

In an attempt to address the holes and avoid a losing skid, the organization will reportedly take a hard look at four-time All-Star Madison Bumgarner. The San Francisco Giants’ great was released by the Arizona Diamondbacks this week and is now a free agent. “According to league sources, the Mets will do their homework on Bumgarner,” SNY MLB insider Andy Martino reported on Thursday.

However, in his report Martino feels it is doubtful they sign Bumgarner after he posted a 10.26 ERA in four starts this season. He also went 14-25 over the last two seasons with Arizona.

Nevertheless, the Mets need some help right now, and signing aging veterans has been their modus operandi over the last two years, so it does not seem impossible in the coming days.
