Should the New York Yankees and New York Mets swap two of their young, talented, but frustrating players before next week’s MLB trade deadline? The Athletic MLB insider Jim Bowden believes it is something both teams should seriously consider.

Both Jasson Dominguez and Mark Vientos had big expectations heading into the 2025 season. The Yankees outfielder was not only the top prospect in the team’s system, but was viewed as one of the very best in the sport in recent years. While Vientos had a huge breakthrough season in 2024, as he slugged 27 homers and knocked in 71 RBIs.

However, neither has come anywhere close to expectation and now seems expendable. That is why Jim Bowden had an idea this week. Why don’t the Mets and Yankees swap their disappointing but talented youngsters?

“The Yankees are pursuing Eugenio Suarez like five other teams are. If he gets traded, we are not going to know until next week. And there’s no promise the Yankees can pick him up,” the former MLB GM said on The Foul Territory Show. They’ve looked around at the other third basemen available. Ryan McMahon in Colorado. Ke’Bryan Hayes over there in Pittsburgh. Neither one of them tickles their fancy for understandable reasons.

So how do the Yankees make a contender for contender trade to solve the third base situation? I came up with the idea of Jasson Dominguez going to the Mets for Mark Vientos. Two similar talents. Change of scenery might help both guys,” he added. “For the Yankees, they’ve got Trent Grisham, Cody Bellinger, and Aaron Judge in the outfield. And [top prospect] Spencer Jones is ready. He’s hit 26 home runs in the minors, and he’s on base at a 40% clip. He’s made incredible adjustments.”

Dominguez has the potential to be a perennial All-Star in the league. However, he has been average at the plate despite being in an elite lineup. His struggles in the outfield have only made things worse. Vientos has taken a huge step back in 2025 in performance, and injuries have halted any momentum.

  • Mark Vientos stats: .224 AVG, .279 OBP, .354 SLG, .633 OPS, 6 HR, 25 RBI, 22 R

The Yankees have been looking for a long-term option at third base. Vientos could be an intriguing option and would not cost them premium prospects. The Mets have been looking for a new centerfielder. Dominguez played that position the majority of his time in the minors. While he may not be a big league-level center, they still might be open to taking him due to his massive potential.

A trade between the two in-city rivals is not happening. But it is certainly an intriguing idea.
