The Chicago Cubs will undoubtedly need offensive firepower this offseason. It is very, very unlikely that Chicago will bring back Kyle Tucker after trading for him last winter, meaning the lineup will have an empty hole. However, the Cubs appear to be gearing up for another run at an All-Star third baseman.

According to The Athletic’s Patrick Mooney and Sahadev Sharma, the Cubs are showing renewed interest in signing Alex Bregman this offseason. Last year, Chicago joined the Detroit Tigers as losers in the Bregman sweepstakes after he signed with the Boston Red Sox.

Now, with Tucker almost certainly gone, the Cubs are looking to sign Bregman for a second straight winter. Chicago needs a two-way player who delivers at the plate and in the infield, making the 31-year-old an outstanding fit. However, it will likely come down to money once again.

Boston might not have enough room for Bregman, while Detroit seems poised to focus on pitching, despite its interest. Therefore, the Cubs could be in a good spot to land the All-Star third baseman. If Chicago puts together an excellent offer to Bregman, he could be playing in Wrigley Field in 2026.
