The Boston Red Sox are seeking a middle-of-the-order bat during the MLB Winter Meetings, with several options available. Boston’s top target is Alex Bregman, who opted out of his contract with the organization after one year. However, what is the latest on one of Boston’s backup plans for Bregman?

The Red Sox are “not in” on free-agent infielder Bo Bichette unless his market changes, as reported by CBS Sports’ Julian McWilliams. Bichette, who has spent his entire MLB career with the Toronto Blue Jays, has been linked to Boston for a while, but the organization has focused more on Bregman this winter.

This doesn’t mean Bichette won’t sign with the Red Sox, but Bregman has been a higher priority. Plus, the market for the free-agent shortstop might be too much for Boston’s liking right now. If Bregman were to sign elsewhere, it could be the spark that ignites the Red Sox’s interest.

In 2025, Bichette hit 18 home runs and drove in 94 runs over 139 games. The 27-year-old shortstop also posted a .923 OPS during the postseason. The Red Sox might not be in the market for Bichette right now, but if something changes, the organization would welcome his elite offense.
