The Boston Red Sox aren’t being shy during the 2025 MLB offseason. After trading for starting pitchers Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo, the Red Sox are looking to acquire a middle-of-the-order bat to help their offense. In fact, Boston has been linked to a two-time World Series MVP at the MLB Winter Meetings.

The Red Sox have held talks with the Texas Rangers about a trade for shortstop Corey Seager this winter, as reported by the Boston Globe’s Alex Speier and Tim Healy. Seager, who hasn’t played over 120 games in a season since 2022, currently has six years and $189 million left on his contract with Texas.

In 2025, the two-time World Series MVP hit 21 home runs and drove in 50 runs over 102 games. Despite missing lots of time, Seager has still been a five-to-seven WAR player over the last three seasons with the Rangers. The injury concerns are high, but there is no denying his raw talent.

It is unclear how much Boston would have to give up to acquire Seager, but Texas could retain some of his contract. The Rangers could be open to trimming their payroll during the 2025 MLB offseason, and if so, the Red Sox could pursue Seager in what would be a massive deal.
