On Wednesday, the Boston Red Sox made a move they hope locks up a future star for many years to come at a very affordable rate. And it was a decision met with hilarious joy from Beantown fans.
ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan was the first to break the news that Boston and rookie Roman Anthony had come to terms on a massive $130 million deal that will keep him with the club for most of the next decade. The talented youngster has made a strong impression in his first 46 games with the team. And has been a key part of their resurgence over the last month.
There was a time when giving a player who’s had the proverbial cup of coffee in the big leagues a long-term deal would have been ridiculous. However, it has become a popular trend for many teams — especially in smaller markets — around MLB. There is certainly a risk in the deal. But if Anthony turns into the perennial All-Star they think he can be, his $16.25 annual rate will end up being a bargain in a few years.
Since July 1, the 21-year-old has posted a slash line of .330/.444/.485/.929 with 10 doubles, and 161 wRC+. Numbers similar to or even better than what current stars and legends like Fernando Tatis, Jr., Juan Soto, and Albert Pujols were able to do at the same age.
The news comes after the Red Sox were blasted by fans and MLB experts for a very underwhelming return before last week’s trade deadline. However, the team is on a roll right now, and those positive vibes led to some pretty funny and complimentary responses from Boston fans to the Anthony news on X. Below, you can get a look at some of the best reactions on the social media platform.
