Dallas Cowboys’ latest decision on Micah Parsons contract could lead to drama

The Dallas Cowboys hope to get star defender Micah Parsons locked up on what would be a record-breaking contract this offseason.

One of the top pass rushers in the NFL, Parsons is eligible for an extension for the first time in his career. However, Dallas has other priorities during the offseason.

First off, they have to figure out the Dak Prescott contract situation. The reigning NFL MVP runner-up is set to count $59.46 million against the cap in 2024, the final year of his current contract.

Extension talks on that front are expected to heat up at some point soon. Meanwhile, star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb is also entering the final year of his rookie contract. He is also a priority.

It’s in this that Dallas picked up the fifth-year option on Parsons’ rookie deal for the 2025 season. That’s no surprise. But it does come with a caveat that could complicate things.

According to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, Parsons’ fifth-year option was picked up as a defensive end instead of linebacker. It’s roughly a $2.68 million difference.

For someone of Parsons’ draft stature (No. 12 pick in 2021 NFL Draft), this could lead to some drama. The fifth-year option for a linebacker in 2025 is set at an estimated $24 million compared to $21.32 million for a defensive end.

Parsons, 24, did play north of 80% of his snaps at the line this past season. This could be part of the Cowboys’ thinking. Though, the former Penn State star could also file a grievance under the guise that he plays multiple positions.

All of this becomes moot if Dallas is able to lock Parsons up on a long-term deal ahead of the 2025 season. But there could be some long-term ramifications. This is especially true with Parsons in line for a record pay day that would surpass the $34 million Nick Bosa is earning annually with the San Francisco 49ers.

As you can see, Parsons is among the best pass rushers in the NFL. He will ultimately be paid like it. When this happens is anyone’s best guess. For now, Dallas’ move on Tuesday could lead to some questions moving forward.
