Mark Cuban is a savvy businessman who’s had success across multiple platforms, including as an NBA owner. So when he speaks up on business matters, it’s a good idea to at least hear him out.
On that note, the Dallas Mavericks owner appeared on ESPN to discuss the Oakland Raiders’ decision to move to Las Vegas.
He’s not a big fan.
In fact, he thinks the league’s decision to approve that move and chase the insane amount of money that’s being offered will eventually backfire.
“Why? There’s just no good reason. It’s no disrespect to Las Vegas, it’s a great city and it’s vibrant. But they’re going to a smaller market, it’s transient, and it’s just another example of chasing every last dollar, and that tends to backfire,” Cuban said, (h/t Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk).
The new stadium is tentatively set to be ready for the Raiders to play in 2020. Will the team see a full house every weekend, or will the new digs fail to bring in the masses? That’s a question we can’t wait to find out the answer to.
We’ve taken a hard look at Oakland’s decision to move to Vegas and ultimately believe the idea that there’s not a big enough market to support the team is bogus (more on that here).
But there’s no doubt it is a smaller market, and it will be fascinating to see how the entire thing plays out over the course of the next decade or so.
