LOOK: Cam Newton sports ‘Rosie the Riveter’ pin on hat

The Carolina Panthers public relations department is now working overtime to help quarterback Cam Newton overcome what many view to be sexist comments he made earlier in the week.

Boarding the team’s flight to Detroit on Saturday, Newton was seen wearing a women empowerment pin on his hat. And the Panthers themselves made sure to post it on social media in a not-so-subtle manner.

This is one of the most-iconic images from the feminist movement of decades ago. Known primarily as Rosie the Riveter, the image became synonymous with the We Can Do It movement decades later.

The skeptic in us concludes that Newton and the Panthers are attempting some sort of disaster control on the heels of his questionable apology following the incident.

In any event, Newton is definitely looking to change his public image. Whether displays like this help remains to be seen. What we do know is that Newton has been popular around social media.

And it’s not for the right reasons. It will be interesting to see if this latest drama surrounding the NFL has any legs. The hope here is that Newton has learned from his mistake. In today’s social media world, one wrong turn can define a person. That’s magnified when we’re talking about a former NFL MVP.
