There remains very little doubt that LeBron James will return to the Los Angeles Lakers for a seventh season. James has a contract option worth $51.42 million for the 2024-25 campaign. He’s certainly going to opt out of said deal.

In no way does this mean that the 39-year-old James will hit NBA free agency. It’s been a longstanding belief that he’ll ultimately re-sign with the Lakers.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst pretty much confirmed this on Wednesday. The NBA insider indicated on “Get Up” that it’s been an expectation around the Association that James will ultimately opt out of his deal. The caveat? It’s “more contract structure” than James having any real desire to leave the Lakers in free agency.

James has been linked to contenders such as the Philadelphia 76ers in NBA rumors recently. But those aren’t necessarily reports. Rather, it’s all about connecting the dots with Philadelphia slated to have a ton of room under the 2024-25 NBA salary cap.

James has continued to build up a brand in Southern California after bolting the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Lakers ahead of the 2018-19 season. He also reportedly prefers remaining on the west coast.

Continuing this marriage through the twilight of his career has also made sense for James.

It’s now all about the Lakers’ process this coming summer. Head coach Darvin Ham was fired after a first-round exit against the Denver Nuggets in the NBA Playoffs. In their current form, the Lakers are not legitimate title contenders. We’re sure James is having conversations with general manager Rob Pelinka and Co. about plans for the summer.

As you can see, James continues to play at a high level. If he ever decided to explore his opportunities, there would not be a shortage of interest in the future Hall of Famer. Right now, that’s not looking likely.
