The NHL offseason didn’t wait for the Stanley Cup to be decided as the Leafs have started to clear cap space by trading Kasperi Kapanen to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Maple Leafs trade Kapanen
The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded two-way forward Kasperi Kapanen and prospects to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for a first round pick and prospects.
The move clears $3.2 million in cap space which was the main objective for Kyle Dubas this summer. The Leafs need to create more room in order to rework their defense and possibly improve their goaltending situation.
For the Penguins, they add a young and gritty forward in Kapanen to their team. The 24 year-old plays a great game on both sides of the puck and is a threat shorthanded.
Pens GM, Jim Rutherford also said that he will be trading one of his two goalies, so more moves are coming.

NHL rumors Marc-Andre Fleury
So is Marc-Andre Fleury done in Vegas? Robin Lehner appears to have taken over the starting role. This prompted Fleury’s agent, Allan Walsh to put out a now deleted tweet of Fleury being stabbed in the back.
This has started conversations about Fleury’s future in Vegas. Over at Spector’s Hockey, they feel that this will become an even bigger problem if Fleury continues to be the backup.
The 35 year-old backstop has 2 years remaining on a deal with a cap hit of $7 million. Trading him could prove difficult with what many believe will be a flooded goalie market this offseason. Fleury also has a 10 team no-trade list which will increase the difficulty.
