After a wild few days, the Las Vegas Raiders have finally found their offensive coordinator for real this time. Kliff Kingsbury won’t be calling plays in Vegas, but Luke Getsy, the former Chicago Bears’ offensive coordinator, will be.

Oftentimes, who a team hires to run the offense signals the direction the front office is heading in. We know the Raiders will be working overtime, trying to find their franchise quarterback this offseason, so how does Getsy’s hire impact their future at QB?

From 2022-23, Luke Getsy was the offensive play-caller for Justin Fields and the Chicago Bears. After the season concluded, the Bears announced they’d be moving on from Getsy. This was somewhat expected, as the Bears clearly aren’t getting enough production out of their offense, with Fields failing to develop into a franchise cornerstone.

Since the offseason began, the Raiders have been considered a potential trade fit for Fields, being that he’s expected to be available for a reasonable cost of multiple Day 2 selections. Not to mention, this Raiders offense has been far too one-dimensional, with a lack of mobility at the QB position.

With the Raiders sitting on the 13th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, hoping a top QB falls to their draft slot may be far too risky, and there aren’t exactly a ton of free agents who inspire more confidence than Jimmy Garoppolo.

This leaves the Raiders in a tricky spot, with a desperate need at the most important position on the roster, yet no concrete way to solve their needs. Without a top pick, in addition to a lack of free agent options, taking a chance on a 24-year-old former first-round pick seemed like a perfect opportunity for Las Vegas.

But now that they’ve hired Getsy, who struggled to maximize Fields’ potential in Chicago? Don’t hold your breath on trading for Fields, Raiders fans. Longtime Raiders insider Vic Tafur feels the same way.

NFL insider Mike Giardi later chimed in with a similar assessment to Tafur, noting that the Raiders feel like the playcalling wasn’t the issue with the Bears’ offense the past two seasons.

After struggling to develop as a passer for two years under Getsy in Chicago, why would Fields want to follow him to Vegas? The same rings true for Getsy. Unless he can unlock Fields as a passer, any thoughts of quickly becoming an NFL head coach can be forgotten for the 39-year-old playcaller. Ultimately, it may be best for the Raiders to look elsewhere at QB this offseason than turn to Chicago for Fields.
