Kyle Schwarber activated, set to make Boston Red Sox debut

Outfielder Kyle Schwarber, who was acquired by the Boston Red Sox at the trade deadline, was activated off the injured list and is scheduled to make his debut with his new club Friday.

To make room on the active roster, the Red Sox designated infielder-outfielder Marwin Gonzalez for assignment.

Schwarber will serve as designated hitter for Boston and bat sixth Friday.

Schwarber was acquired from the Washington Nationals on July 29 in exchanged for minor league right-hander Aldo Ramirez despite being out of action with a hamstring injury. He has not played since July 2.

The 28-year-old was batting .253 with 25 home runs and 53 RBIs in 72 games during his first season with the Nationals. He was red-hot at the time of his injury, batting .338 with a 1.383 OPS and 16 home runs in a stretch of 21 games before he went on the IL.

In seven seasons, Schwarber is a .233 hitter with an .828 OPS and 146 home runs with 332 RBIs in 623 games for the Chicago Cubs and Nationals.

Gonzalez, 32, was batting .202 with two home runs and 20 RBIs in 77 games with the Red Sox this season. He is a career .256 hitter with 98 home runs and 389 RBIs in 1,039 games over 10 seasons with the Houston Astros, Minnesota Twins and Red Sox.
