The Klay Thompson saga with his Golden State Warriors could soon come to a head. He can start negotiating with other teams at 6 PM ET on Sunday as the four-time NBA champion embarks on free agency for the first time in his career.

Thompson, 34, has spent his first 13 NBA seasons with the Warriors. He played a major role in a dynasty that included four championships.

That’s why it’s so stunning that Thompson is seriously considering bolting Northern California. He’s been a part of the big three. He’s helped build a culture and a foundation of winning.

But all good things ultimately come to an end. Things are pointing in the direction of Thompson leaving the Warriors once free agency opens.

While Klay did put up his worst statistical performance since the guard’s sophomore season in 2012-12, he can still be a valuable contributor as a three-point options. It promises to lead to somewhat of a healthy market.

According to Matt Moore of The Action Network, Orlando is willing to offer Thompson a two-year contract worth $50 million.

It’s not yet known what Golden State was willing to offer Thompson on a per-year basis. But its latest offer was of the two-year variety, too. He’s said to be looking for a three-year deal, complicating matters in the process.

While that $25 million per-year offer seems to be robust, it could also lead to Thompson returning to the Warriors if the market doesn’t expand.

“I don’t think it’s absolute that Klay Thompson’s days as a Warrior are done. The Magic are interested in Thompson, but league sources say those offers are centered around short-term deals,” Moore noted in the same report. “Thompson may want more guaranteed money over more years, which allows for the Warriors to retain him.”

It’s not really a surprise that Orlando is targeting wing options in free agency. Coming off a surprise appearance in the NBA Playoffs, its roster is centered around star forward Paolo Banchero and big man Franz Wagner. Adding someone of Thompson’s ilk to the mix would round out the roster in a big way.
