Kirk Cousins ‘more likely than not’ will end up with 49ers in 2017?

Where will Kirk Cousins end up? Given the number of teams who need a quarterback and the relatively bare market at the position, it’s one of the more important questions of the NFL offseason.

According to NFL.com’s Mike Silver, it’s “more likely than not” that Cousins will end up with the San Francisco 49ers.

Cousins and the 49ers line up well with each other. Cousins and current San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan have a history with each other from when Shanahan was the offensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins. A prior report (which you can read here) indicated that Shanahan would pursue Cousins.

Given that Cousins has been given the Redskins exclusive franchise tag, the question is, can Washington and San Francisco work out a trade? There has been talk that the two might involve the Dallas Cowboys in discussions for a three-way deal.

The 49ers have a need at the quarterback position (they literally have zero on the roster). Additionally, the team that does land Cousins will likely have to quickly lock him up on a long-term contract. Given the team’s salary cap space, San Francisco is more equipped than most to do that.

Both in terms of compensation and financial value, Cousins won’t be cheap for the 49ers. But on paper, the two sides are a perfect fit. It makes sense that Cousins is “more likely than not” San Francisco bound.
