Kansas City Chiefs fans may need to be worried about Patrick Mahomes’ ankle issue

The ankle health of Kansas City Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes was a major issue in the team’s final three games, however, surprisingly it is still ongoing despite the Super Bowl champions ending their season months ago.

The Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl hopes were put into serious jeopardy in their Divisional Round win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. This past season’s NFL MVP’s ankle was injured during the game and he was noticeably hampered as he led them to their first postseason win in 2023.

However, the five-time Pro Bowler was still able to suit up in the AFC Championship game, scoring another big win, and limped his way into and through their triumph in February at Super Bowl LVII. With the Lombardi Trophy in the bag and the season in the rearview, most Kansas City Chiefs fans assumed the story of Patrick Mahomes and his ailing ankle was over. Well, they were wrong.

Kansas City Chiefs record (2022): 14-3, first place in AFC West

It seems that Mahomes still has not fully healed from the high ankle sprain he played through at the end of the season. Usually, such an injury should take four to six weeks to heal but the Kansas City Chiefs are just over eight weeks removed from the Super Bowl, and the superstar quarterback revealed during a recent interview that he is still battling through the issue in April.

“I think now it’s been more about just kind of managing it, but getting the mobility back as best as I possibly can. I wouldn’t say I’m 100 percent, but I’ve had no necessarily limitations. It’s just when you go through a grind of a week of training and you’re trying to push it and go through the rehab process, but at the same time, you want to make sure you’re still building. You might be a little sore on the weekends. I think we’ve done a great job of pushing it to the right limit to where I’m now I’m throwing and stuff like that and having no limitations there.

“I think running and cutting, there will still be a little bit of limitation for the next few weeks, but I’m happy with where I’m at, and we’ll keep pushing it and getting me to the right spot for the beginning of the season.”

While the Kansas City Chiefs franchise QB should be healed by the start of training camp, it is surprising that the injury may end up taking double the time to heal for the 27-year-old. It is also surprising that he is still trying to train through the existing issue and not just completely rest it and get it back to 100% first.

It will be something to monitor heading into the summer.
