One of the most impactful players for the Kansas City Chiefs in the fourth quarter of their Super Bowl LVII matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles is a player who wasn’t even on the roster at the start of the season. Kadarius Toney, a mid-season acquisition at the NFL trade deadline from the New York Giants, has stolen the show on Super Bowl Sunday.
Toney, who was the 20th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, was traded by the Giants after falling out of favor with the new regime. The Chiefs, recognizing Toney’s ability to make defenders miss with his quick feet, traded a 2023 third-round pick plus a sixth-round selection for the former Florida receiver.
But we didn’t see much of Toney until the Super Bowl. He had just 16 receptions for 171 yards and two touchdowns during the regular season.
That changed on Sunday when Toney got wide open near the goal line for a five-yard touchdown reception. This may not seem like a game-changing play, but what he would do on his next chance to touch the ball changed the momentum in a flash.
Toney received a punt from Eagles punter Arryn Siposs and took it back 65 yards for a new Super Bowl record, all the way back to the five-yard-line, setting up the Chiefs for an easy touchdown two plays later.
Despite touching the ball just three times, Toney has had a profound impact on Super Bowl LVII. Not bad for a player who joined the team on October 27.
