Derby Hero Golden Tempo Follows Up In Belmont Stakes For Trainer Cherie DeVaux

Next year the Belmont Stakes will return to it’s normal home at Belmont Park, but full marks to Saratoga Race Course, who have carried the can for this final Triple Crown race over the last three seasons.

With the last running (for now anyway) at Saratoga going to the Cherie DeVaux trained GOLDEN TEMPO who finished the strongest up the Saratoga stretch on Saturday night.

This year’s Kentucky Derby winner bypassed the Preakness Stakes to freshen up for the Belmont – a move that paid off, with the improving 3yold colt staying on best up the Saratoga straight to see off Wathnan Racing’s Commandant.

With the Todd Pletcher-trainer favorite Renegade back in third.

Golden Tempo followed last year’s winner Sovereignty in winning both the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes – with many racing fans now wondering if he’d actually been good enough to have landed the Triple Crown had he not missed the Preakness.

Cherie DeVaux followed Jena M. Antonucci as the second female winning trainer of the Belmont Stakes.

Golden Tempo’s Belmont Stakes win also gave jockey Jose L Ortiz a third success in the final Triple Crown race.

Ortiz had previously won the prize with Mo Donegal (2022) and Creator (2016).

Meaning the Puerto Rico-born rider has won three of the last 11 Belmont Stakes renewals.
