Saratoga’s Three-Year Belmont Stakes Chapter Comes To An End

Between 2024 and 2026, Saratoga Race Course served as the temporary home of the Belmont Stakes while construction work continued at Belmont Park.

Although the move proved hugely popular and attracted strong crowds, the arrangement was always intended to be temporary.

The 2026 running represented the final Belmont Stakes to be staged at Saratoga, bringing the curtain down on a unique three-year period in the race’s history before the event heads back to Elmont, New York, in 2027.

Golden Tempo Captures The 2026 Belmont Stakes

The most recent winner of the Belmont Stakes is Golden Tempo, who produced another powerful late surge to land the 158th running of the race on June 6, 2026.

Ridden by Jose Ortiz and trained by Cherie DeVaux, Golden Tempo stormed from the rear of the field to defeat Commandment, with Kentucky Derby rival Renegade finishing third.

The victory followed Golden Tempo’s success in the Kentucky Derby and further enhanced his reputation as one of the leading three-year-olds of his generation.

The win also created history for DeVaux, who became the first female trainer to win multiple Triple Crown races. And in the process collected $1.2m of the $2m Belmont Stakes purse.

Golden Tempo’s triumph ensured the final Belmont Stakes held at Saratoga would be remembered for both sporting excellence and a landmark achievement in the training ranks.

A Fresh Start For A Historic Race

Since first being run in 1867, the Belmont Stakes has been synonymous with Belmont Park and its demanding test of stamina.

The return to its traditional surroundings in 2027 is expected to be one of the biggest stories of the American racing season.

With a brand-new grandstand, upgraded facilities and renewed excitement surrounding the venue, the 2027 Belmont Stakes promises to blend the race’s rich history with a modern racing experience.

After three memorable years at Saratoga (2024-2026), the “Test of the Champion” is finally heading back where many believe it belongs – Belmont Park.
