Hall of Fame basketball coach Bob Knight dies at 83

Bob Knight, otherwise known as The General, died at his home in Bloomington, Indiana, at 83 years old on Wednesday night, his family announced.

Here is the family’s statement:

“It is with heavy hearts that we share that Coach Bob Knight passed away at his home in Bloomington surrounded by his family.  We are grateful for all the thoughts and prayers, and appreciate the continued respect for our privacy as Coach requested a private family gathering, which is being honored.  We will continue to celebrate his life and remember him, today and forever as a beloved Husband, Father, Coach, and Friend.  

In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Coach with a memorial contribution to the Alzheimer’s Association or Marian University.

Knight, was enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991 and the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.

He coached for 42 seasons, leading Army, Indiana, and Texas Tech. Knight won AP Coach of the Year honors three times, in 1975, 1976, and 1989. He was also a three-time NCAA Division I Champion as a coach, in 1976, 1981, and 1987, all coming with the Hoosiers.

Knight retired in 2008 as the NCAA’s all-time wins leader among men’s basketball coaches with 902 wins at the Division I level. After his retirement, Knight’s legacy lived on, joining ESPN as a studio analyst and color commentator from 2008 to 2015.
