Carolina Panthers legend could reportedly become candidate for head coach opening in 2024

One of the best receivers in Carolina Panthers history, Greg Olsen, reportedly has an interest in their head coach opening if the team is willing to interview him.

David Tepper’s run as the owner of the Carolina Panthers has been disastrous. The team has posted double-digit losses in all but one season after his purchase of the organization was finalized in 2018. Yet, what has really made it tumultuous is Tepper’s impatience and willingness to oust head coaches who are not delivering the results he is looking for.

In the six seasons he has been the owner, the franchise has had six different individuals fill the position of head coach after he fired three of them. However, things have hit an all-new level of unpredictability in 2023 with the Panthers in the midst of one of their worst seasons in franchise history.

After falling to 1-10 after another loss in Week 12, Tepper fired new head coach Frank Reich. This comes a year after firing his predecessor, Matt Rhule, midway through last season. The bold decision has furthered a growing narrative about the Panthers’ head coach job being far less desirable than others due to an impatient owner who has high standards for a franchise that is mostly known for losing during its history.

Greg Olsen interested in Carolina Panthers head coach job

While it is unclear who might be interested in the job after the season, it seems that one of the team’s greatest players would be very open to the position if the organization were willing to take his candidacy seriously. On Monday, The Athletic reported that former Panthers great Greg Olsen “would be interested in the Panthers’ vacancy if he were approached, according to sources close to Olsen who were granted anonymity so they could speak freely.”

Olsen does not have any head coaching experience and currently serves as the analyst for FOX’s top NFL broadcast team. The three-time Pro Bowler played nine of his 14 seasons in the league with Carolina and is third on the team’s all-time lists for receiving yards, and catches and fourth in receiving touchdowns.

Tepper failed to find a long-term answer as head coach when he hired Rhule from the college ranks and in bringing in a veteran coach with Reich, so it isn’t completely out of the question that he might consider an outside-the-box candidate in 2024.
