The PGA Tour returns to its single-event format after a couple tournaments going on simultaneously over the last two weeks. On the schedule this week, the PGA Tour heads to TPC Twin Cities for the 3M Open.

Last week, Brian Harman captured his first Claret Jug at the 151st Open Championship in the final major of the year. He rose all the way up to No. 10 in the Official World Golf Rankings.

In addition, Akshay Bhatia won the Barracuda Championship on the first playoff hole over Patrick Rodgers. Bhatia became the first player to win a PGA Tour event while holding a Special Temporary Membership card since Tom Kim won the Wyndham Championship last year.

As a result, it was the first time two left-handed golfers won on the same day on the PGA Tour.

This week, the PGA Tour completely returns to the U.S. with just two events remaining – 3M Open and Wyndham Championship – before the FedEx Cup playoffs begin.

As a result, those in this week’s field are trying to put together last-minute opportunities to get inside the top 70 of the FedEx Cup Standings.

Last year, Tony Finau won the 3M Open after being down by five shots with 11 holes to play. At one point on the back nine, Finau recorded four birdies in a six-hole stretch to win by three strokes.

This week at TPC Twin Cities, the course is a par-71, measuring 7,431 yards. This course was designed by the late Arnold Palmer and opened in 2000.

Rain is in the forecast on Thursday and Friday as temperatures will be cooling as the week progresses. After a projected a high of 92 degrees on Thursday, it is expected to fall 11 degrees by Sunday.

Payout for the 2023 3M Open

The total purse for the 3M Open is set at $7.8 million and the winner will receive $1.4 million. In addition, the winner will receive 500 points towards the FedEx Cup standings.

Who are some of the top golfers in the 3M Open?

The reigning champion, Tony Finau, is playing this week. Finau ranked No. 10 in the FedEx Cup standings entering this week, has missed the cut in his last two starts: the Open Championship and the Rocket Mortgage Classic. However, Finau is looking to bounce back while being in the marquee group with Sepp Straka and Hideki Matsuyama for the first two days.

Straka is coming off a win at the John Deere Classic and a runner-up finish at the Open Championship. He has risen 35 spots since the beginning of the month to No. 15 in the FedEx Cup standings. Matsuyama is coming off his second T13 finish in his last three starts, including the Open Championship last week.

In addition, a couple of Finau’s Team USA teammates from last year’s Presidents Cup are competing with a little bit of pressure in Justin Thomas and Billy Horschel.

Thomas ranks 75th in the standings and Horschel ranks 119th. This year’s FedEx Cup playoffs have become more competitive with the top 70 making the playoffs, shortening the first round by 55 spots from a season ago.

One of more unique things taking place this week is Erik van Rooyen’s caddie playing in the same group win van Rooyen. His caddie, Alex Gaugert, qualified on Monday for the 3M Open. Gaugert, who was teammates with van Rooyen at the University of Minnesota, which is about 20 miles away from TPC Twin Cities, finished eagle-birdie-par and was one of four players to advance to a playoff where the top three moved to a Thursday tee time.

As a result, Gaugert is playing with his boss and former Golden Gopher teammate, van Rooyen, as well as Ryan Moore. van Rooyen currently sits at No. 127 in the FedEx Cup standings while Moore sits at 154th heading into this week.

5 players who the best chance to win the John Deere Classic trophy on Sunday

Sepp Straka

Sepp Straka comes into this week playing well over the last few weeks. Straka has returned to the top 25 in the Official World Golf Ranking after getting to as low as 40th in May. Straka is looking to get inside the top 10 to improve his rank in the FedEx Cup standings as players are awarded strokes for how a player does in the FedEx Cup standings at the Tour Championship.

The biggest part in Straka’s game that has favored him has been in his approach, ranking 14th this season in strokes gained: approach the green. Last week at the Open Championship, Straka ranked second in the field with 9.79 strokes gained approach.

Ludvig Aberg

It doesn’t feel like Ludvig Aberg is still the newest player on the PGA Tour as he missed his first PGA Tour cut in his seventh start at the Genesis Scottish Open a couple weeks ago. However, before that missed cut, he tied for fourth at the John Deere Classic, which was benefitted by a second-round 64 and final-round 63 for his best rounds as a PGA Tour member.

Aberg currently sits in 145th and is 368 points behind K.H. Lee for the 70th spot in the standings. That means, it will take at least a second-place finish for 300 points and a top-11 finish for 70 points to reach the 70th spot or a victory for 500 points.

Emiliano Grillo

Like Straka, Emiliano Grillo is coming off a top-10 finish at the Open Championship last week as he sits at No. 23 in the FedEx Cup standings while looking to keep things rolling in his return over the Atlantic Ocean.

This is Grillo’s fourth appearance at the 3M Open. Last year, he was the runner-up to Finau and in 2020 he finished tied for third, which was benefitted by finishing 64-65 over his final 36 holes.

Cameron Young

Like Grillo, Cameron Young is coming off a strong start at the Open Championship last week, tying for eighth. Young currently sits at No. 41 in the FedEx Cup Standings and is currently 210 points behind Jordan Spieth for the No. 30 spot, which guarantees the top 30 players a spot in the final leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs, the Tour Championship.

Young, who has five top-10s this season and is ranked No. 15 in the world rankings, is still looking for his first PGA Tour win during his sophomore season this year. He ranks 12th this season in strokes gained: off the tee, which has kept in tournaments, including leading last week’s Open Championship field in strokes gained: off the tee and approach, while being ninth in total strokes gained.

Adam Hadwin

Sitting four spots ahead of Young in the FedEx Cup standings is Adam Hadwin, who also has five top 10s this season. Despite missing the cut in his most recent start at the John Deere Classic, he lost in a playoff when Rickie Fowler won the Rocket Mortgage Classic that also included Collin Morikawa in the extra hole.

Like Grillo, Hadwin has also had two good appearances at TPC Twin Cities, finishing fourth in 2019 and sixth in 2021.
