With the 2020-21 NBA season less than two weeks away, it appears that the Giannis Antetokounmpo contract situation is going to remain a major talking point surrounding the Milwaukee Bucks.

Most figured that the two-time reigning NBA MVP would have signed his super-max extension with the Bucks. The new Giannis Antetokounmpo contract extension would net him $228 million over five seasons and enable Giannis to enter free agency when he’s still in his prime. Apparently, that might now happen.

That’s a rather interesting comment from the Greek Freak. After all, there’s not a lot to discuss between his agent and the Bucks’ organization. It’s not like Milwaukee can offer Antetokounmpo any more than that $228 million. They are capped out in that regard.

All of this comes after Milwaukee pulled off a blockbuster trade for star guard Jrue Holiday last month as a way to potentially appease their impending free agent. Whether that will be enough for a new Giannis Antetokounmpo contract remains to be seen.

To say that the Bucks are in a rush to extend Antetokounmpo would be an understatement. Simply put, the team can’t afford for him to test the free-agent waters next summer. Among the teams interested in the Greek Freak, the Golden State Warriors have long been linked to him.

Meanwhile, Giannis is also being linked to the likes of the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers and Miami Heat. All represent larger markets and more growth potential off the court.

Still only 26, Antetokounmpo is averaging 27.9 points, 11.9 rebounds and 5.4 assists on 55% shooting since the start of the 2017-18 season. He has taken over for LeBron James as the face of the NBA. Simply put, the Bucks can’t afford to lose him in free agency. That makes a new Giannis Antetokounmpo contract a major priority.
