The Formula 1 paddock can finally quiet down as Max Verstappen has officially confirmed he will remain with Red Bull Racing for the 2026 season. This puts an emphatic end to weeks of intense speculation, particularly rumors linking the multi-time champion with a sensational move to Mercedes.
Sky Sports, ESPN and Motorsport have all confirmed this major news with Verstappen.
Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko didn’t mince words when addressing the swirling rumors. He confirmed Verstappenās decision, stating it was always clear to him that the Dutchman would stay. Marko also noted that Mercedes boss Toto Wolff seemed to fuel rumors about Verstappen’s potential switch. According to Marko, a move for 2026 would have been “foolish” for Max, given that the new regulations mean it will be a blank slate where no one knows which team will have the best engine or chassis.
Verstappen himself offered insight into his thinking, explaining he never really said anything about leaving. Instead, he was focused on discussions with the team about performance improvements and plans. He emphasized that it was clear to him that he was staying, as serious talks about the car’s direction continued ā something he wouldn’t do if he weren’t committed.
Some people just like to stir the pot, some people just like to create drama. But, for me, it’s always been quite clear, and also for next year. I’m discussing with the team already the plans, the things that we want to change for next year. So that means that I’m also staying with the team for next year. – Max Verstappen
Factors influencing this decision reportedly include a realigned vision for Red Bull’s future under a new management structure, with Laurent Mekies now at the helm following Christian Hornerās departure. This change in direction may have been a deciding factor for Verstappen to remain. Any possibility of an exit via a performance clause in his contract is now reportedly gone.
With Verstappenās future secured, Red Bull can now focus entirely on the significant work ahead to prepare for the crucial 2026 regulation changes. The F1 world now watches to see who will fill the other open Red Bull seat for the 2026 season.
