One of MLB’s best upcoming free agents could receive new contract before free agency begins

Detroit Tigers pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez has a few options ahead of MLB free agency. The former World Series winner currently has three years and $49 million left on his contract, but there’s a strong sense the left-handed starting pitcher could receive much more on the open market.

He even has an opt-out clause in his contract, but he must decide whether to enter free agency by the end of today. Being that teams would likely offer him much more than the $16.3 million salary he’s currently set to earn if he hits free agency, Rodriguez may have an easy decision.

Then again, according to MLB Network’s Jon Paul Morosi, the Tigers continue negotiating with Rodriguez and could end up restructuring his contract instead. This would prevent Rodriguez from entering free agency while also keeping one of Detroit’s best starting pitchers on the staff for several more years to come.

Rodriguez, 30, has spent the past two seasons pitching for the Tigers. He also pitched for the Boston Red Sox for six seasons before joining Detroit as a free agent after the 2021 league year.

Should he opt out of his contract, Rodriguez would immediately become one of the best southpaws on the free agency market.
