The Edmonton Oilers ‘ worst-kept secret is now out.
Earlier this morning, TSN’s Ryan Rishaug announced the news on the social media platform X.

“The Oilers have relieved Kris Knoblauch of his coaching duties,” Rishaug wrote. This happens merely days after rumors swirled regarding the Oilers’ interest in speaking with former Vegas Golden Knights head coach Bruce Cassidy.
This also comes out almost eight hours after the 2 Mutts Hockey Podcast shared some insight in their own report.
“We are hearing tonight that the Edmonton Oilers & Kris Knoblauch are working towards mutual parting of ways this evening,” the post said. “Official announcement is expected by the organization shortly. A few players from our understanding are upset with how this got leaked out to the public & handled by the management staff. Kris is liked & respected by the players.”
“The Oilers are still working towards interviewing Bruce Cassidy this week as well, with Bruce being the leading candidate for the New Head Coaching position. Lots of moving parts here.”
Cassidy has been linked to both the Oilers and the Los Angeles Kings.
At the time of this writing, the Oilers have not made an official statement. However, The Athletic and Sportsnet are also reporting the coaching change.
Following the Cassidy interview leak, the Oilers were forced into this position. Given the success that Knoblauch has had behind the bench in Edmonton, he won’t be out of a job for long. The aforementioned Kings are looking for a new bench boss, as are the Toronto Maple Leafs. It’s easy to see that Knoblauch could find himself interviewing for at least one coaching vacancy in the weeks to come.
