Trade rumors around this time of the year are like sunshine; the further into the summer you get, the more there is.

The Edmonton Oilers already have a ton of decisions to make this summer. While some believe that they need to find a way to ship out defender Darnell Nurse, greater problems must be addressed.

One of those problems was addressed by Oilers Now radio host (employed by the team, mind you). Bob Stauffer appeared on the 100% Hockey Podcast and spoke with the hosts about a few issues burdening the team.

Oilers Insider Addresses Jarry-Ingram Tandem

One topic discussed was the tandem of Tristan Jarry and Connor Ingram. Jarry is under contract for a few more years, while Ingram is a free agent.

“They’re going to have to find a way carrying forward here with Tristan Jarry,” Stauffer told the hosts, Daren Millard and John Shannon. “Under the assumption that he’s in Edmonton next year, they got to work with them, just like they got to work with (forward Trent) Frederic, right? Like they got to work with those guys and get it out of them.”

“I think Jarry is a superior puck handler. He’s got a great glove hand.”

Additionally, Stauffer is unsure whether the Oilers are interested in bringing Ingram back.

“I think they got to get that sort of stuff figured out,” Stauffer reasoned. “I think Ingram gave them about as much as he could, but he didn’t steal a game in the playoffs. We got to see what happens with Ingram. But I think they may have to look at going outside the organization to address this trend forward.”

Eastern Conference Team Has What the Oilers Need?

Stauffer goes on to suggest a trade for a goalie prospect. Namely, one that is closer to NHL-ready than their current crop of hopefuls.

“Maybe they need to target a younger goaltender in an organization that’s deep with goaltending prospects,” Stauffer urges. “They got a lot of goaltending prospects themselves. But they’re years away, you know, three to four years away. There’s one club in the East that’s got four pretty good goaltenders in their system right now. So we’ll see what happens here, carrying forward.”

“I’m not going to say the team. I respect that organization for having goaltenders.”

My Thoughts on Goalie Prospect Trade

  • The Detroit Red Wings are likely the team Stauffer is referring to.
  • On PuckPedia, Detroit has Michal Postava, Trey Augustine, Carter Gylander, and Sebastian Cossa as its signed prospect goaltenders.
  • The Red Wings have $32,791,667 in salary cap space before addressing their free agent situation.
  • Postava and Augustine are signed for at least one more season. Cossa and Gylander will become Restricted Free Agents on July 1st, 2026.
  • Cossa, 23, has a big frame but has fallen out of favor with the Red Wings organization. Given that his contract is expiring, Detroit may be motivated to trade him prior to July 1st.
  • Unfortunately for the Oilers, they must address their goaltending from multiple angles.
  • If they play better defense, it will make things much easier on their netminders.
  • The Oilers goalies need to spend the summer improving on a weakness in their game to become better overall players.
  • If the organization believes in Jarry’s ceiling, they likely won’t trade him away.

One way or another, it’s going to be an interesting offseason for the Oilers. Addressing their goaltending issues must be a top priority.

We wait to see if they truly feel the same way.
