Eagles were prepared to block Nick Foles to an NFC East rival

Prior to the start of free agency, the Philadelphia Eagles seriously considered placing the franchise tag on former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles.

After seeing the quarterback opt out of his contract, most figured Philadelphia’s goal was to get something for him in a trade.

However, less than a month after the fact, Eagles owner Jeffrey Laurie is telling us another story. Philadelphia was going to place the tag on Foles in order to prevent him from signing with the division-rival Washington Redskins or New York Giants.

There was some question about whether the current collective bargaining agreement allowed for Philadelphia to tag Foles with the specific purpose of trading him.

All of this became moot when reports early in the process suggested Foles was dead set on signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Within a day of free agency opening, Foles had indeed landed in Duval on a four-year deal worth as much as $102 million.

As it relates to the Giants and Redskins, they are both still seeking that franchise quarterback.

New York made it clear on Tuesday that it’s looking to find an eventual heir-apparent to Eli Manning. Meanwhile, Redskins President Bruce Allen isn’t so quick to jump to that conclusion.
