Dylan Carlson hit homers from both sides of the plate and drove in three runs to rally the St. Louis Cardinals past the visiting Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 on Thursday afternoon.
The Cardinals (89-70) won for the 18th time in their last 19 games while the Brewers (95-64) lost for the seventh time in their last 11 games.
Cardinals starting pitcher J.A. Happ (10-8) allowed three runs on nine hits in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out seven batters and walked nobody.
Relievers Kodi Whitley, T.J. McFarland and Luis Garcia combined to blank the Brewers over the last 2 2/3 innings, with Garcia earning his second save.
Brewers starting pitcher Brett Anderson allowed two runs on three hits in five innings. Reliever Miguel Sanchez (2-1) allowed Carlson’s decisive two-run homer and took the loss.
The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Nolan Arenado hit a leadoff single, Paul DeJong smacked a double off the center field wall and Jose Rondon hit a sacrifice fly.
DeJong moved to third on that play, but Matt Carpenter lined out and Andrew Knizner flied out to strand him.
Luis Urias tied the game 1-1 with his third-inning homer, but Carlson countered with a solo blast in the bottom of the inning to put the Cardinals up 2-1.
The Brewers surged ahead 3-2 in the fourth inning. Eduardo Escobar led off with a double, and Tyrone Taylor, Omar Narvaez and Keston Hiura followed with singles to produce two runs.
Escobar hit a two-out single in the fifth inning and moved to third on Taylor’s single. Taylor stole second base, but Narvaez grounded out to leave two runners in scoring position.
The Cardinals took a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning when Tommy Edman hit a single and Carlson followed with his two-run homer.
The Brewers got the potential tying run to second base in the ninth inning. Avisail Garcia walked with one out and took second on a wild pitch, but Lorenzo Cain and Kolten Wong struck out to end the game.
