Philadelphia Eagles backup quarterback and reigning Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles sat out the team’s preseason opener against the cross-state rival Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night. He joined presumptive starter Carson Wentz on the bench in what was ultimately a blowout loss.

As Wentz looks to fully return from the ACL injury he suffered late last season, Foles himself is dealing with a bit of an injury issue himself.

According to head coach Doug Pederson, the back and neck spasms that had inflicted Foles earlier this summer have let up. It will enable him to practice on a limited basis on Saturday.

This has to be considered great news for the defending champs. While it’s still early in the preseason, having both of your starter-caliber quarterbacks sidelined to injury isn’t ideal.

If Wentz is somehow unable to go in Week 1, Philadelphia will need Foles on the field. It’s that simple. If not, Philadelphia would have to be forced to go with either Nate Sudfeld or Joe Callahan under center. Again, not ideal.
