The Detroit Pistons have the money and reportedly the interest in pursuing Draymond Green in NBA free agency this summer.

Last season was a disaster for the Detroit Pistons. They lost young star Cade Cunningham for the season in the first month, and their first-round draft picks from 2022 were unable to make a meaningful impact in their rookie campaigns.

Unsurprisingly it led to Dwane Casey stepping down as head coach and the organization making a bold and expensive push to land former Phoenix Suns head coach Monty Williams. Now, the organization is hoping Williams can lead a revamped roster back to prominence in the near future.

The first major addition to the roster came last week when the Detroit Pistons made Overtime Elite star Ausar Thompson their top pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. Next, they are expected to use their nearly $30 million in salary cap space to make a splash in NBA free agency, and it seems a multi-time champion could be a possible target in July.

Detroit Pistons seen as contenders for Draymond Green

On a Monday edition of “Get Up,” ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst spoke on the situation between the Golden State Warriors and team legend Draymond Green, and two rival teams that could be top contenders for his services.

“There are some team’s out there with cap space that are intriguing options for him. The Detroit Pistons, which would be home. The Sacramento Kings have cleaned up their books and opened up a bunch of salary cap space after a draft-night deal. Both of those teams I think would have interest in him.”

Draymond Green is from Saginaw, Michigan, and became a college basketball star during his run with Michigan State. The Detroit Pistons would offer the chance to return home for the final years of his career and would likely put him in a position where he is the undisputed top star and leader on a team.

Windhorst, however, did note that the Warriors are still the clear front runners to re-sign Green this summer.
