Dallas Mavericks NBA Championship odds shrink big time following Kyrie Irving trade

NBA: New Orleans Pelicans at Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks’ NBA Championship odds have been reset following Sunday’s blockbuster trade for future Hall of Fame guard Kyrie Irving.

Sitting at 28-26 and as the sixth seed in the Western Conference, Dallas’ odds were previously set at +3000 prior to the Irving trade, via DraftKings Sportsbook. Said odds are now +1200. That’s an absolutely ridiculous shortening of the team’s odds.

It’s also pretty darn surprising given what we’ve seen from the Denver Nuggets and Memphis Grizzlies at the top of the Western Conference this season.

Add in Irving’s enigmatic ways and lack of availability over the past few seasons, and that’s magnified further. He played in just 51% of Brooklyn’s games since joining the team back in 2019-20.

Even then, the duo of Irving and Luka Doncic has to scare the heck out of opposing NBA teams. If the former is available and comes to Big D drama-free, these Mavericks will be a major force moving forward.

Irving is averaging 27.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.3 assists on 49% shooting this season. Despite being sidelined to a minor injury, Doncic has been on a completely different level than his counterparts in 2022-23.

A big three of Irving, Doncic and Christian Wood can go up against anyone the Western Conference has to offer. The same thing could be said about the Philadelphia 76ers, Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks in a potential NBA Finals matchup.
