Dallas Cowboys showing interest in NFL Draft QBs

As a two-time Pro Bowler and the quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys for the past seven seasons, Dak Prescott is firmly entrenched as the starting gunslinger for ‘America’s Team’. Unless, of course, he’s not.

While backups Cooper Rush and Will Grier aren’t coming for Prescott’s starting gig any time soon, based on the team’s interest in some of the QB prospects in the 2023 NFL Draft class, perhaps the Cowboys aren’t entirely happy with their depth chart.

Yet, there’s a specific theme the Cowboys seem to be sticking with when getting a closer look at this year’s crop of QBs. They all are local products who either attended nearby Houston, TCU, or have high school ties to Texas.

According to Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys have already worked out Heisman finalist Max Duggan, who experienced great success with the Horned Frogs leading to a CFP National Championship appearance.

The Cowboys have also worked out Houston’s Clayton Tune, who had nearly 12,000 passing yards to go with 104 touchdowns and 41 interceptions across five seasons with the Cougars.

Lastly, the Cowboys have even communicated with Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker, who is likely to be a Day 2 pick, if not higher. That’s particularly noteworthy, considering the Cowboys only spent a fourth-round pick on Prescott back in 2016. Now they’re at least gathering info on a player they’d have to invest a second or third-round pick in? Interesting.

While it’s fairly typical for teams to do their homework on a few quarterbacks from each draft class, any time a team like the Cowboys gets involved, it’s worth looking into.

Yet, with quarterback being the most important position in football, wouldn’t it make sense to evaluate them each and every year? Teams rarely have a great starter and a proven backup. Yet, one could make a case that the Cowboys already have both with Prescott and Rush.
