Despite being a two-time Pro Bowler, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is far from perfect. As if the Cowboys’ playoff struggles weren’t enough evidence, the 29-year-old QB also led the NFL with 15 interceptions last season, despite playing in just 12 games.
The turnover problems seemingly came out of nowhere, with Prescott posting a new career-high 3.8% interception rate. His previous career high came in his second season at 2.7%. Otherwise, he’s never thrown a pick on more than 1.8% of his passes in the regular season across his seven-year career.
So what was the issue last season, where Prescott didn’t quite look like himself?
This is apparently what the Cowboys wanted to discover as well, so they sat down with their franchise QB this offseason to review his mistakes from 2022. Here’s what coach Mike McCarthy had to say about their chat.
“Definitely, we spent some time. He was in for the captains workout (earlier this month). So he came up and spent about four hours with Scott (Tolzien, QB coach) and I. And we went back and looked at his decision-making opportunities and the interceptions and potential interceptions and just talking through it.”

While it’s unclear what Prescott and the Cowboys learned from these practices, they have made one significant change to their offense, moving on from offensive coordinator and playcaller Kellen Moore. Now McCarthy will be calling plays, and longtime coach Brian Schottenheimer has taken over coordinating duties.
But will any of it lead to better on-field decisions from Prescott? Moore wasn’t telling him when or where to throw the ball in 2022, and that won’t be changing in 2023 either. It’s all up to Prescott once the bullets start flying.
