Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones admits one area of need ahead of NFL trade deadline

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has been more than clear about his team’s plans leading up to the NFL trade deadline.

Despite rumors linking Dallas to various players on the trade block, the longtime owner doesn’t think Dallas will be active.

“It’ll have to come our way. I don’t want to preclude it in any way, but it always does,” Jones said last week. “That’s not showing a lack of aggressiveness it’s just that’s where it starts. I like where we are with our personnel today. I’m not thinking in any way that we need to upgrade our roster.”

Jones did not change his tune following Sunday’s blowout 43-20 win over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. In particular, he pushed back against rumors that the ‘Boys are targeting Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry.

“I like our running backs. I don’t want to dismiss anything but that is not a pointed position of need. At all. Not on the radar,” Jones told reporters Sunday evening.

It really doesn’t make sense for Dallas to go after a running back after placing the franchise tag on Pro Bowler Tony Pollard this past offseason. Pollard tallied just 53 rushing yards on Sunday, but he’s also on pace for nearly 1,500 total yards on the campaign.

Depth can be seen as somewhat of an issue behind Pollard with Rico Dowdle and rookie Deuce Vaughn having done very little of substance through eight weeks.

The one area Jones did focus on in talking with reporters Sunday was the offensive line. He said that everyone is looking for depth on the line leading up to the deadline.

“Everybody in the league’s looking for starting offensive linemen,” Jones said. “Everybody.”

Left tackle Tyron Smith missed Sunday’s game against the Rams with a neck injury. Fellow offensive lineman Chuma Edoga left in the second half with an ankle injury.

Injuries have been an issue for this unit in Dallas. Unfortunately, there are not a ton of options available on the market with the NFL trade deadline quickly approaching.

As it is, don’t expect much movement from the Cowboys here over the next 48 hours or so.
