Despite having Alex Van Pelt handle offensive coordinator duties for the past four seasons, the Cleveland Browns fired coach Kevin Stefanski’s right-hand man. In addition to coordinating the offense, Van Pelt also acted as the Browns quarterbacks coach, but not anymore.

In an effort to get more out of the offense while helping Deshaun Watson return to top form, the Browns are seeking outside help, and they’ve finally found who they feel is the perfect candidate.

While fans in Cleveland likely haven’t forgotten about Ken Dorsey the player, as he started three games for the Browns during a woeful era in 2008, they may not be as familiar with Ken Dorsey the coach, who’s become much more revered in the NFL.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Cleveland Browns are hiring former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey for the same role. Dorsey has also served as Buffalo’s quarterbacks coach, where he worked closely with Josh Allen, who has been a big advocate of his former mentor.

Yet, despite leading the No. 2 ranked scoring offense in 2022, the Bills decided to move on from Dorsey after a 5-5 start to the 2023 season. The Bills promoted Joe Brady, who then called plays for the rest of the season, and has since earned the full-time role heading into 2024.

During the first ten games of the season, when the Bills had Dorsey calling plays, they averaged 26.2 points per game. When Brady took over for the final nine games, including the playoffs, the Bills averaged 27.1 points per game. These are both lower than Buffalo’s 28.4 PPG in 2022, yet still, Dorsey has clearly shown an ability to perform his job at a high level.

In addition to working with Allen, Dorsey was also the Carolina Panthers QB coach from 2013-17. Cam Newton won his MVP in 2015. This is a key point, considering Kevin Stefanski typically calls the plays in Cleveland, which means a large part of Dorsey’s focus could be on working with Deshaun Watson, trying to help him return to MVP form.
