NBA reporter expects Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks to pursue Chris Paul this summer

As the Phoenix Suns prepare to close the door on the Chris Paul era, the New York Knicks and Golden State Warriors could reportedly be in the mix to land the All-Star point guard.

Paul, heading into his age-38 season, is coming off a three-year run in Phoenix. During his tenure as the Suns’ point guard, he averaged 15.1 points, 9.5 assists and 1.6 steals per game. While he helped the Suns take the next step as a contender, age and declining durability influenced Phoenix’s decision to move on from him.

The 12-time All-Star selection hasn’t officially been released, with the Suns first exploring their trade options. However, NBA teams expect Phoenix to void the remainder of his contract, paying him his $15.8 million guaranteed and allowing him to test the open market.

While the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers have loomed as the betting favorites to land the future Hall of Famer, there will reportedly be significant competition for his services.

Appearing on ESPN’s NBA Countdown, Adrian Wojnarowski shared his belief that the Knicks and Warriors could join the Lakers and Clippers in pursuit of Paul this summer.

“If Chris Paul is out there as a free agent this summer, look at the two teams in L.A.—the Clippers and Lakers—the Knicks in New York, or the Golden State Warriors. Those would all be potential destinations for Chris Paul, who would then sign a deal at a much lower number than the $30 million he’s guaranteed in Phoenix if he stays there past that June 28 deadline.”

While Paul has averaged over 32 minutes per game and 64 games played per season over the last three years, he’s often struggled to stay on the floor in the playoffs. Injuries have become a recurring issue, forcing Phoenix to limit his minutes and rest him more frequently.

Depending on what role Paul is open to with his next team, it could make the Knicks and Warriors ideal landing spots. New York and Golden State both have franchise point guards who primarily handle the ball and average 35-plus minutes per night.

If the veteran point guard landed with either team, he could play a smaller role that puts less wear and tear on his body and keeps him fresh for the playoffs. New York and Golden State could also offer him an opportunity to compete for a championship, the only accomplishment he hasn’t achieved.

While the Lakers will remain the favorites to sign Paul this summer, the right offer from the Warriors or Knicks could convince him to play elsewhere.
