A scary scene unfolded as Oakland Athletics ace Chris Bassitt took to the mound against the Chicago White Sox in the Windy City Tuesday evening.
In the bottom half of the second inning, Bassitt was nailed on the right side of the face on a hard hit line drive by White Sox outfielder Brian Goodwin.
The video is extremely hard to watch.
As you can see, Chris Bassitt went down in a heap at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago holding his head. He was down for several minutes.
The starting pitcher was seen leaving the field on a cart while still holding his head with what appeared to be a blood-drenched towel.
It goes without saying that everyone on the scene in Chicago and watching the game from home were shaken up big time. That includes several White Sox players.
The 32-year-old Bassitt has pitched like a true ace for the contending A’s this season, tallying a 12-3 record with a 3.06 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 24 starts. Obviously, he’s important to the team’s success.
Even then, this is all about the pitcher’s health. We’ll have updates as they become available.
