The Chicago Cubs appear ready to move on from right-hander Brandon Workman, designating the veteran reliever for assignment Thursday after 10 appearances and eight innings pitched.
The Cubs recalled left-hander Justin Steele from their alternate training site to fill out their bullpen.
Workman, 32, had a 6.75 ERA to open the season after he agreed to a $1 million, one-year deal in the offseason. He gave up 12 hits, two home runs and allowed seven walks with 11 strikeouts.
Workman, who had as many as 16 saves with the Boston Red Sox in 2019, is 25-22 over 219 appearances (18 starts) with 25 career saves for the Red Sox (2013-20), Philadelphia Phillies (2020) and Cubs.

Steele made his major league debut on April 12 for the Cubs and has not given up a run over three appearances (3 1/3 innings), while allowing two hits.
